Happy Monday, ultrarunners! Here’s this week’s Ultra Minute.
Last week in ultrarunning
🦖 David Roche took the win at Leadville this weekend, toppling Matt Carpenter’s iconic 19 year record in the process!
As a listener of David and Megan Roche’s super informative (and fun) podcast (Some Work, All Play), it was really enjoyable to see him take the win. Catch their most recent episode where they talk about his ambition to beat the record, as well as Kilian Jornet’s recent article about his 2024 training (linked below):
And, don’t miss
’s recent interview with them where they have an interesting conversation about how the sport of ultrarunning is changing, and discuss his Leadville goals:🐐Kilian Jornet wrote about his training from this year, where he focused on being fit for short, fast races like Sierre-Zinal and Zegama. Kilian may be the G.O.A.T., but there’s plenty for us normies to learn from this must-read. Read it here.
In his article, Kilian mentioned his training takes some inspiration from Stephen Seiler, so I did some digging and found this great Ted Talk from Stephen, titled “how normal people can train like the world’s best endurance athletes”:

reflected on her world record (running an ultra-distance every day for 200 consecutive days), her recent injuries, and our human need for each other:💃🏼 Katie Schide, 2024 Western States champ, treated us to some BTS footage of her shaking it out before the big race. Click through to see her move and groove:
🐎 Jeff “Bronco Billy” Browning kicked off his FKT attempt of the Colorado Trail. He started in Durango yesterday morning, and is planning to take the Collegiate West route (the CT has two different routes - Collegiate West or East).
He also made an appearance on
’s Freetrail Pod last week where he discusses his attempt in more detail:And, Mountain Outpost is providing daily livestreams covering the attempt. Catch the preview show here, and tune into all of the daily streams here.
🏆 Finally, Jim Walmsley returned to the
podcast to discuss his upcoming defense of the title at UTMB, some takeaways from Western States and observations he made spectating at this year’s Hardrock 100. With UTMB just around the corner, this is a great one to listen to on your run this week as we build up to UTMB:That’s it for this week. If you enjoyed it, I’d love to hear from you in the comments. See y’all on the trail :)

That was such an epic performance from David. He called his shot -- and nailed it!
